Building a Model of How Healthy Cultures Lead to Business Success

This website is dedicated to the relationship between healthy cultures and organizational success.  In our recently published book, Unleashing Human Energy through Culture Change, we make the argument that a healthy culture is the key to creating a workforce that is fully engaged and working in partnership with management to make the company successful.  Our in-depth analysis of the General Motors Tonawanda Engine Plant’s successful transition from a toxic to a healthy culture revealed the steps taken to accomplish its healthy culture and how this led to the plant’s financial turnaround and success.

Recently, we published several posts on how Cutco Corporation found similar success after transforming its toxic culture into an employee-centric one.  With the help of its workforce, Cutco grew sales and profits, transforming itself from a small, struggling company into a leader in its industry. What we learned from both the Tonawanda Engine Plant and Cutco is that while each company had unique challenges, they both shared similar values about their workforce.  Their management believed that a culture built on faith in its people, trust, and respect would be instrumental to its success. They also developed a strong sense of optimism with workers that through teamwork, the company could be successful in reaching its goals.

While the Tonawanda Engine Plant and Cutco give us insights into the relationship between a healthy culture and company success, they are but a small sample of two. With this in mind, we decided to reach out to other companies in a variety of industries that have also created healthy cultures that led to their growth and prosperity. It is our goal to demonstrate how each of these companies created a healthy culture and how it overcame many challenges in the process.  We will identify the leaders who dedicated themselves to creating a healthy culture and how they were able to lead their companies through its challenges. And, in each case, we will demonstrate how the cultural alignment of management and its workforce unleashed the human energy to accomplish amazing results.

Our goal is to offer our readers a working model of how to create a healthy culture and how to leverage this culture into building a successful company.  By analyzing many companies that have both healthy cultures and success in their industries, we believe we will add credibility to our claim that healthy cultures lead to healthy and successful companies.
